The framework
What is Preferment?
Last updated:
Is there an alternative to conventional retirement?
Yes: Preferment is an active alternative to conventional retirement.
Preferment is the Rarified Life framework for redesigning life after work around personal values, purpose and meaningful activity. Built for high achievers approaching or in retirement, it replaces the idea of retiring from something with the idea of moving toward something you choose.
Definition
Preferment, in one paragraph
Preferment is a research-informed framework and platform from Rarified Life that helps people, especially high achievers, redesign life after work. It works through six stages: Introduction, Identity, Motivation, Alignment, Accountability and Launch. The aim is not to fill time but to decide what your time is for, then build the structure to live that way.
How is Preferment different from retirement?
Conventional retirement is defined by an ending. The career stops, the calendar empties, and the assumption is that rest and leisure will fill the space. For many people that works. For people whose work gave them identity, challenge and a sense of being needed, it often does not.
Preferment starts from the opposite assumption. The end of a career is treated as a beginning that deserves the same deliberate design you once gave your work. Rarified Life describes the goal as treating this chapter like an ascension rather than an ending, and as a life people ask you about rather than one filled with errands and appointments.
It is also not a five-year plan. In Rarified Life's words, you do not need a five-year plan; you need a room to start figuring it out in.
The six stages of Preferment
The stages run in order, because each one depends on the one before it.
Introduction: where you are now
An honest look at your starting point, and at why the conventional model of retirement, built around stopping, rarely suits people who have spent decades building something.
Identity: who you are without the title
Separating who you are from what you did for a living, so that your answer to "So, what do you do?" no longer starts with "I used to."
Motivation: what moves you now
Finding what actually drives you once a paycheck, a promotion or a client deadline is no longer the reason to get up.
Alignment: values into days
Matching your values and strengths to how you will actually spend your time, week by week.
Accountability: structure that holds
Building routines and commitments that turn good intentions into a lived pattern.
Launch: naming the mission
Putting words to your mission for this next chapter, and stepping into it.
"Water adapts, flows, and even carves its path through solid rock, not by force but through persistence and patience."
Who Preferment is built for
Rarified Life designed Preferment for driven people approaching or already in retirement, particularly those whose identity has been wrapped up in their work. It also runs a free presentation aimed at accomplished women in their 50s and 60s who are nearing or in retirement. You do not need to have retired yet; Rarified Life says you can start even if your last day at work is still years away.
Exploring Preferment before the course
You can work with the ideas on this site at your own pace. Start with how to enjoy life after retirement and retirement lifestyle planning. When you want a guided, live path through all six stages, the Preferment 8-week course is the next step.

Common questions
- What is Preferment?
- Preferment is a research-informed framework from Rarified Life for redesigning life after work around your values, purpose and meaningful activities. It is presented as an active alternative to conventional retirement: instead of treating the end of a career as an ending, it treats it as a deliberate next chapter you design.
- How is Preferment different from retirement?
- Conventional retirement is usually defined by stopping: leaving work and filling time. Preferment, as Rarified Life frames it, is defined by choosing: deciding who you want to be next and organizing your days around values and purpose. The course describes the next chapter as an ascension rather than an ending.
- What are the six modules of the Preferment course?
- The six modules are Introduction, Identity, Motivation, Alignment, Accountability and Launch. They move from understanding where you are now, to separating who you are from what you did, finding what moves you, matching values to daily life, building structure, and finally naming your mission for the next chapter.
- What does research-informed mean for Preferment?
- Rarified Life describes Preferment as a research-informed framework, meaning it draws on research about life after work rather than opinion alone. This site does not republish the underlying studies. Where it cites numbers, such as on the By the Numbers page, each statistic is quoted with its original source.
- What if my whole identity was my job?
- That is the core problem Preferment is built for. The Identity module focuses on separating who you are from what you did for a living, and Rarified Life promises a real answer to “So, what do you do?” that does not begin with “I used to.” For many high achievers this is the hardest and most useful step.
- Is Preferment the same as an encore career program?
- Not exactly. Encore career programs focus on finding new paid work after a first career. Preferment is broader: it helps you choose how to spend your time based on values and purpose, which may include paid work, service, creative projects or learning. Work is one possible outcome, not the assumed one.
